Critical electrical safety sensor located within the remote control box or shift linkage mechanism that prevents the engine from cranking or starting while the outboard is actively engaged in forward or reverse gear.
Technical Specifications
- Component Type: Neutral Switch Assembly / Neutral Safety Switch
- Primary Function: Completes the ignition starter circuit only when the gear selector is positioned in true dead-centre neutral
-
Engine Compatibility: Commonly found on larger Suzuki V6 and inline-4 4-stroke outboard models packaged with top-mount or binnacle-style single remote control boxes:
- DF200 / DF200TX / DF200TXZ
- DF225 / DF225TXX
- DF250 / DF250TXX
Diagnostic Relevance
If your batteries are fully charged and gauges power on, but turning the key results in complete silence (no clicking, no cranking), a failed neutral safety switch is the primary suspect. Over time, internal copper contacts corrode or the mechanical plunger wears down, tricking the ECM into thinking the motor is still in gear.
