Genuine Suzuki Marine Water Pressure Valve (Poppet Valve)

A spring-loaded cooling system component — commonly referred to by mechanics as the poppet valve. It regulates cooling water pressure within the engine block.

Technical Specifications

• Component Type: Water Pressure Control Valve (Poppet Valve)
• Primary Function: At low RPMs, it remains closed to force water through the thermostat and warm up the engine. At high RPMs, high water pump pressure forces the valve open, bypassing the thermostat to dump excess water volume and prevent over-pressurisation or blown gaskets.

Diagnostic Relevance

If your outboard runs completely fine at low idle speeds but throws a “Hot” or overheating warning alarm as soon as you accelerate past 2,500–3,000 RPM, this poppet valve is the primary culprit. Salt crust, sand, or small pieces of debris from a degraded impeller can wedge the valve stuck. When stuck shut, the engine over-pressures; when stuck open, the engine will often “cold-stall” or take too long to reach operating temperature at idle.

Essential Companion Part

When replacing or cleaning this valve, the factory service manual highly recommends replacing its sealing rubber ring. Do not forget to order the matching Water Pressure Valve O-Ring (Part #09280-26006) to prevent external water leakage from the valve cap.
